The Cost of Uncertainty: Navigating the Boundary Between Legal Information and Legal Services in the Access to Justice Sector

The self-regulatory bodies that oversee legal professionals in Canada maintain strict control on the delivery of legal services, and access to justice projects must therefore always be conscious of activities that would violate certain restrictions. Careful adherence to these parameters is made difficult, however, by the lack of clarity about where the relevant boundaries are drawn. Using a project that provides legal assistance for refugees as a case study, this article highlights the challenges that the unclear distinction between “legal information” and “legal services” creates for access to justice initiatives. We conclude that the uncertainty can carry a variety of significant costs—including financial expense, human resource burdens, and unnecessary limits on program innovation—in a sector where affordable and creative solutions are desperately needed as a result of a persistent access to justice crisis. Ultimately, it is not merely the under-resourced access to justice sector that bears these costs, but rather disadvantaged individuals and society as a whole

Feeding ancient cities in South Asia: Dating the adoption of rice, millet and tropical pulses in the Indus civilisation

© Antiquity Publications Ltd, 2016.The first direct absolute dates for the exploitation of several summer crops by Indus populations are presented here. These include rice, millets and three tropical pulse species at two settlements in the hinterland of the urban site of Rakhigarhi. The dates confirm the role of native summer domesticates in the rise of Indus cities. They demonstrate that, from their earliest phases, a range of crops and variable strategies, including multi-cropping, were used to feed different urban centres. This has important implications for understanding the development of the earliest cities in South Asia, particularly the organisation of labour and provisioning throughout the year

Finding Quality Reviews for Young Adult Books

The following study sought to determine which journals provide the best reviews of young adult books by investigating the research question "Of the journals librarians most commonly consult for young adult book reviews, which utilize the criteria that experts consider essential in a quality book review?" The research sample included fiction titles from YALSA's (Young Adult Library Services Association) Best Books for Young Adults 2007 that had reviews in four specific journals, Booklist, Kliatt, School Library Journal, and Voice of Youth Advocates. Content analysis was used to code 140 reviews using a set of criteria developed by Margo Wilson and Kay Bishop in 1999. The results show that all of the journals addressed most of the criteria in their reviews, but each journal had strengths and weaknesses. This information potentially will help young adult librarians in both school and public libraries decide which review sources to consult when making collection development decisions
